Dragon Boat Festival

1. What is Dragon Boat Festival or Duanwu Jie? Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar, Duanwu Jie, or the Dragon Boat Festival, honours storied history with culinary treats. Marked in 2021 on June 14, the festival’s main elements—now popular the world over—are racing long, narrow wooden boats decorated with dragons. There are many competing explanations for Duanwu Jie but all involve some combination of dragons, spirits, loyalty, honor, and food—some of the most important traditions in Chinese culture.

2. What’s the story of Dragon Boat Festival? Chinese festivals are usually explained by the traumatic death of some great paragon of virtue, says Florida-based East Asian scholar Andrew Chittick. And so the Duanwu Jie story’s tragic hero is Qu Yuan, a royal advisor during ancient China’s Warring States period. Exiled for perceived disloyalty, Qu Yuan had proposed a strategic alliance with the state of Qi in order to fend off the threatening state of Qin, which the emperor didn’t buy. Unfortunately, Qu Yuan was right about the threat. The Qin soon captured the Chu emperor and laid seige on his empire. Upon hearing the tragic news, Qu Yuan in 278 B.C. drowned himself in the Miluo River in Hunan Province.

3. Why is it called the Dragon Boat Festival? The festival is marked by the iconic Dragon Boat Races. To make sense of how a dragon gets into the story, we need to understand that the water dragon was a crucial mythical creature of Chinese mythology who was considered the controller of the rain, river, sea, and all kinds of water. May is the summer solstice period, the crucial time when rice seedlings were transplanted. To ensure a good harvest, the dragons carved on the boats were “asked” to watch over the crops. In another interpretation, the dragon boat races were initially a military exercise in the erstwhile state of Chu, which took place during the solstice because that’s when the river was highest. Small boats were an important part of warfare which later turned into spectator sport.
